About Phoenix Recycling, Durango, CO

Our Mission

Phoenix Recycling LLC provides world class recycling with small town service in and around Durango, CO. We offer LEED accredited recycling for new construction, on-site sensitive document shredding, and weekly curbside service for rural customers.

Our History

2001 Phoenix was founded, offering curbside recycling in the rural areas of La Plata County, with trash collection added a year later. In 2003, on-site document shredding and recycling was added. In 2004, Phoenix received the Green Business Leadership Award from the Durango Chamber of Commerce.

2006 Founder Mark Thompson leveraged just $200,000 in private equity to create Colorado’s first co-mingled construction waste recycling facility utilizing manual sorting to avoid high start-up costs and create jobs.

Our Evolution

2008 Phoenix Construction Recycling began contributing to LEED certified building projects, including the Durango Library, La Plata County Courthouse, and Berndt Hall building. 2012 saw the purchase of new Haul ’N One trucks, enabling a single truck to efficiently collect both trash and single-stream recycling, loading into separate hoppers.

2016 Phoenix Recycling further expanded its operations by building a new 15,000 sq. ft. sort facility on 29 acres. This is the only facility in La Plata County that sorts single-stream recycling and construction waste on one set of conveyors.

Presently

2020 Phoenix upgraded to automated Haul ‘N One trucks to keep up with the community’s growing demand for recycling. The newer trucks still utilize separate hoppers to keep recycling and trash separated, allowing just one truck to service a neighborhood. This reduces vehicle emissions, wear and tear on our roads, and improves the safety of our drivers.

Phoenix has seen steady growth, now employs 20 people and has remained above compliance with all regulatory agencies since its inception.
